Description:
The Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program was created by the Drug-Free Communities Act of 1997 to establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, public and private non-profit agencies, as well as federal, state, local, and tribal governments to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth. The purpose of the DFC Support Program is to support community-based coalitions in their efforts to prevent youth substance use. Eligible applicants are community-based coalitions addressing youth substance use that have not yet previously received a DFC grant. The program has two goals: to establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, public and private non-profit agencies, as well as federal, state, local, and tribal governments to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth; and to reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, reduce substance abuse among adults by addressing the factors in a community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse. • The DFC Support Program has specific statutory eligibility requirements that applicants must meet to be considered for funding. • The program requires applicants to demonstrate compliance with all statutory eligibility requirements to be considered for continuation funding. • The program has a 5-year project period, with the possibility of renewal. • The program has specific reporting requirements, including annual performance reports, progress reports, and financial reports. • The program has a focus on community-based prevention and requires applicants to have a strong community-based approach to addressing youth substance use.
