Description:
The California Energy Commission’s EPIC program is funding “Advanced Grid Technology Acceleration Projects” to demonstrate and develop grid‑enhancing technologies (GETs) that improve capacity, visibility, flexibility, reliability, or resilience of California’s transmission and distribution system. Applicants may submit either a utility‑demonstration (Group 1, TRL 7‑9) or a development/pilot‑testing (Group 2, TRL 3‑7) proposal. Projects must include a technology‑transfer component, a measurement‑and‑verification plan, and a clear path to commercialization, with strong emphasis on benefits to IOU ratepayers and disadvantaged/low‑income communities. • Eligibility: Any public or private entity (excluding locally‑owned public utilities); Group 1 requires a partner from PG&E, SCE, or SDG&E. • Funding: Up to $26 M total; Group 1 awards $4‑12 M, Group 2 awards $1‑4 M. Minimum match: 30 % (Group 1) or 20 % (Group 2). At least $150 k or 5 % of CEC funds must be allocated to technology‑transfer activities. • Deliverables: Executive summary, 20‑page project narrative, detailed scope of work (≤30 pages), Gantt schedule, budget (Excel), CEQA compliance form, past‑project info, support letters, performance‑metric plan, and applicant declaration. • Timeline: Pre‑application workshop July 11 2025; questions due July 18 2025; application deadline November 14 2025; anticipated award March 12 2026; project period April 14 2026 – March 31 2030.

Budget Estimate (AI):

$2,000,000 – $10,000,000

The solicitation caps total CEC funding at $26 M, with individual award amounts ranging from $1 M (minimum for Group 2) to $12 M (maximum for Group 1). Considering the need for multi‑year effort, equipment purchases, staffing, and technology‑transfer activities, a realistic award for a single qualified project would fall between $2 M and $10 M. Larger utility‑demonstration projects could approach the upper end, while pilot‑testing projects would be nearer the lower end.
