Description:
The Dutch Gap Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration project is located in Antioch, Lake County, Illinois, and aims to restore the aquatic ecosystem within the project area, reestablishing natural hydrologic and hydraulic parameters to support critical wetland and riparian habitats. The project includes the restoration of stream, riparian, wetland, and buffering plant communities to provide habitat for migratory birds and local fish and wildlife. Intensive agriculture has led to the installation of drain tile networks, excavation of drainage ditches, and stream channelization, impacting natural hydrologic and other processes. The project will rehydrate former hydric soils to support critical wetland and riparian habitats and reestablish native plant communities that will further diversify over time, resulting in greater quantity and quality of native plant communities. Some key points to consider for this project include: * The project area spans 785 acres in Antioch, Lake County, Illinois, on land owned by Lake County Forest Preserves. * The project aims to restore the aquatic ecosystem within the project area, reestablishing natural hydrologic and hydraulic parameters to support critical wetland and riparian habitats. * The project includes the restoration of stream, riparian, wetland, and buffering plant communities to provide habitat for migratory birds and local fish and wildlife. * The project will rehydrate former hydric soils to support critical wetland and riparian habitats and reestablish native plant communities that will further diversify over time, resulting in greater quantity and quality of native plant communities.
