Consultant to investigate unmarked Black & Indigenous grave sites and cemeteries

The Town of New Shoreham is seeking a consultant to investigate unmarked Black and Indigenous grave sites and cemeteries on Block Island. The consultant will conduct research and non-intrusive archaeological investigations to locate unmarked graves and provide a survey report with historical context, methodology, and mapped locations of the graves. The project aims to honor those buried, shed light on Block Island's diverse history, and inform future planning activities. • Conduct archival research and work with genealogical and oral history sources • Survey and map the burial grounds using non-intrusive archaeological methods • Document each identified grave with GPS coordinates and photographs • Provide a survey report with the required information, including historical context, methodology, and mapped locations of the graves
