Forest Legacy Program - FY2028 Funding

The Forest Legacy Program is a competitive grant program that aims to conserve environmentally important forestlands through conservation easements or land purchases. The program is administered by the Forest Service in partnership with State agencies and is funded through the Land and Water Conservation Fund. The program's objectives include providing opportunities for traditional forest uses, maintaining public benefits such as clean water and habitat for fish and wildlife, and supporting local economies. The program is open to State Lead Agencies, which can partner with land trusts, land conservation, and local community organizations to develop and implement projects. • The program requires a minimum of 25% non-federal cost-share. • Projects must be consistent with the goals of the State's Forest Legacy Assessment of Need. • Projects must be located within a designated Forest Legacy Area. • Projects must have a minimum of 75% forestland, or a plan to reforest. • Projects must be sufficiently "ready" to be completed within two years of grant award. • Modifications to a previously funded project must be approved by the Forest Service before submitting a proposal for additional phases.
