Description

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking commercialization partners for the Plasma Liner Experiment (PLX), a novel platform for plasma-jet-driven magneto-inertial fusion (PJMIF) and high-energy plasma applications. The selected partner will be responsible for relocating PLX from LANL, developing and implementing a roadmap for short- and long-term markets, and deploying the platform into high-demand short-term markets while advancing fusion development. The partner should have experience in fusion, aerospace, or advanced energy sectors and be able to commit to a phased, multi-year commercialization plan. • The PLX platform has several key features, including a hybrid fusion model, non-destructive operation, scalable architecture, compact footprint, and high repetition potential. • The technology readiness level is 3, and the patent status is pending. • The partner will be required to submit a commercialization plan that includes company background and qualifications, commercialization vision, technical capability and readiness, business and revenue model, funding and financial capacity, team and talent, and IP and regulatory compliance. • The evaluation criteria for proposals will include technical capability and experience, financial capacity and funding strategy, commercialization vision and market fit, team qualifications and execution readiness, and alignment with DOE/LANL mission and national security objectives.

Budget estimate

$5,000,000 – $20,000,000

Based on the information provided in the document, it is estimated that the budget for this opportunity could range from $5 million to $20 million per customer for hypersonic/TPS validation campaigns in the short term, and potentially much higher in the long term as the partner advances fusion development and deploys the platform into high-demand markets. The estimated costs for transferring and installing PLX, diagnostics, new plasma guns, and staffing are around $7.2 million in the first year, with a total estimated cost of around $28.5 million over three years. The partner's revenue generation strategy, pricing model, and customer acquisition strategy will play a significant role in determining the actual budget. The document also mentions that the partner should have sufficient capital available for PLX transfer and operations, and a fundraising history, which suggests that the partner will need to have a significant amount of funding available to support the commercialization of PLX.
