Outdoor Rx: Expanding Opportunities for Veterans On NYS Public Lands

On Veterans Day 2020, New York States’ Outdoor Rx Act became law. The newstatute called upon the New York State Division of Veterans’ Services (hereinafterDVS) to assemble the Outdoor Rx Committee (“Committee”), comprised of publicsector and private sector subject-matter experts and produce a report reviewingissues related to veterans’ abilities to access State parks, lands, and facilities. In2021, DVS delivered the Committee’s report to the Governor and to thedesignated members of the New York State Legislature recommending continuedengagement and support for community-based organizations working to increaseaccess for veterans to medical treatment and nature-based therapy and programson New York public lands, with particular focus on inclusion, equity, andaccessibility for minority, marginalized, and disabled veteran populations.
