A Study on Vessel Design Challenge

The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) is seeking U.S.-based design teams to develop innovative vessel concepts that significantly improve fuel efficiency (target 30% improvement) and reduce underwater radiated noise (URN) while demonstrating economic feasibility and return on investment. Funding will be provided via cooperative agreements, with individual awards ranging from $150,000 to $450,000 and a total ceiling of $1.25 million. Projects must be completed within 12‑18 months and include detailed design, modeling, cost analysis, and a final public report. • Open to all domestic (U.S.) entities except individuals; foreign‑owned but U.S.-registered firms are eligible. • Teams must include naval architects, marine engineers, shipyards, owners/operators, and technology providers. • No restrictions on vessel type, but designs should be commercially viable (no small recreational or fisheries vessels). • Deliverables: preliminary design package, performance modeling, cost/ROI analysis, stability and load assessments, and a final public report. • Full funding (100 %) of approved scope; proposals limited to 20 pages, due 120 days after notice publication.
