Request For Information-DODX Flat Railcars

The United States Army is seeking information from industry partners to replace and modernize its heavy-duty flatcar fleet, which is facing mandatory retirement starting in 2031. The Army is looking for production-ready solutions that meet current and future strategic mobility requirements, with minimal to no additional testing required. The solutions should be capable of carrying two 72-ton M1 Abrams tanks or other heavy tracked vehicles on a single deck. The Army is considering different design concepts, including modernized versions of its current DODX 40000-series and DODX 41000-series flatcars, as well as a drawbar-connected flatcar design and an open design concept. Key performance requirements include carrying capacity, circus loading capability, dimensional standards, load tie-down features, and end-of-car cushioning. • The Army is looking for solutions that can be produced quickly, with a period of performance ranging from 1 to 6 years. • The Army is expecting a total production volume of around 500 railcars, with a minimum required production capability of 100 railcars per year. • The Army is open to innovative design solutions that leverage modern materials, manufacturing processes, and design improvements. • The Army is seeking feedback from industry on the design concepts and requirements outlined in the RFI.
