Research Grants to Rigorously Evaluate Innovative and Promising Approaches to Prevent Firearm-Related Violence and Injuries

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is soliciting research proposals to evaluate innovative approaches to prevent firearm-related violence and injuries. The research should focus on evaluating the effectiveness of approaches to prevent mass shooting incidents, defensive gun use incidents, firearm-related homicides and assaults, firearm-related suicides and self-harm, unintentional firearm deaths and injuries, and firearm-related crime. The proposals can be submitted under two funding options: Funding Option A, which supports research projects that rely on existing data, and Funding Option B, which supports research projects that require new data collection and/or implementation of prevention activities. Some possible research topics include: • Evaluating the effectiveness of approaches to prevent mass shooting incidents • Studying defensive gun use as a strategy for prevention of injuries, deaths, and crime • Developing approaches for different population groups, such as children, youth, and active-duty military/veterans • Creating approaches for different settings, such as rural/urban, home, school, and community • Addressing individual, peer/family, community, and societal risk and protective factors that contribute to firearm-related injuries, violence, deaths, and crime
