Description

BARDA is conducting market research to identify commercially available or near‑commercial technologies that can automatically detect fractures using ultrasound combined with “Super Intelligence” (re‑branded AI) algorithms. The agency seeks detailed technical and business information from small‑business and other‑than‑small‑business firms that can develop, manufacture, and field a rugged, point‑of‑care ultrasound system capable of volumetric imaging, AI‑driven fracture interpretation, and seamless data export for integration into clinical workflows. Responses will inform future acquisition strategies such as purchase, lease, or vendor‑managed‑inventory arrangements. • Required capabilities include volumetric ultrasound capture, AI/ML‑based bone detection with validated sensitivity/specificity, 3‑D rendering, and performance benchmarking against X‑ray/CT. • Device must be portable, rugged, battery‑operated, self‑contained, and interoperable with EHR systems, suitable for both austere field and hospital settings. • Respondents must provide technical and business representations (max 10 pages each) covering development status, regulatory pathway (FDA 510(k) or Breakthrough), U.S. manufacturing capacity, supply‑chain resilience, cybersecurity, pricing/lease models, and market outlook.

Budget estimate

$5,000,000 – $20,000,000

Although this is a Sources Sought (market research) notice and no funding is attached, BARDA is likely to pursue a future procurement of a fully‑qualified device. Similar medical‑device acquisition programs run by BARDA and other HHS entities typically range from a few million to tens of millions of dollars, depending on unit cost, quantity, and support services (e.g., lease or VMI). A reasonable ballpark for the eventual contract is $5 million to $20 million.
