Description
* The Alabama Department of Mental Health is seeking a Visual Gestrural Specialist to provide services for patients and consumers who are deaf or hard of hearing.
* The specialist will provide visual gestural interpreting services, language instruction, and exposure to patients and consumers to improve communication abilities.
* The scope of work includes:
1. Providing visual gestural interpreting services for situations involving patients and consumers who are deaf or hard of hearing.
2. Coordinating visual gestural services for facilities or regions and monitoring invoices from providers.
3. Participating in training related to Mental Health, Deafness, and Interpreting.
4. Completing various reports and paperwork as required by the ADMH.
5. Providing communication assessments of consumers who are deaf or hard of hearing.
6. Assisting with video-based educational or testing related materials for the department in sign language.
* The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree in American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf Studies, Interpreting, or Special Education, and native/near-native fluency in ASL.
* The contract is expected to start on October 1, 2026, and the selection process is expected to be completed by September 1, 2026.
* Proposals will be evaluated based on experience, stability and reputation, understanding of and responsiveness to the Request for Proposal, expertise and knowledge of the requested service, and budget.
