Description

This grant opportunity is for Native-led organizations that work with Native populations off reservation lands for projects related to food sovereignty that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The goal is to improve food security and unlock economic prosperity in low-income and disadvantaged communities. Eligible projects must strengthen food sovereignty and reduce GHG emissions by developing community-driven projects through meaningful engagement. The grant is open to organizations that have documented, significant decision-making capacity and management by Native American members and leaders. The application must include a work plan, budget, and assurance of community representation. • Eligible applicants include Native American organizations, incorporated non-federally recognized tribes, and consortia of Indian tribes. • Eligible projects include installation of deep winter greenhouse space, converting gas- or diesel-powered equipment to electric or sustainable fuel sources, and edible food plantings to increase local production and availability. • Ineligible projects include those that do not have a primary purpose of strengthening food sovereignty and reducing GHG emissions. • The grant award will range from $50,000 to $250,000, with no match required. • The project duration is approximately 29 months, with the estimated start date being November 1, 2026, and the completion date being April 1, 2029.

Budget estimate

$50,000 – $250,000

The budget for this grant is estimated to be between $50,000 and $250,000. The total available funding is approximately $4 million, and the grant is expected to be awarded to multiple applicants. The factors that may influence the likely payment range include the number of eligible applicants, the quality of the applications, and the specific needs of the projects proposed. The MPCA expects to award grants that will support a wide range of projects, from small-scale community gardens to larger-scale initiatives that promote sustainable food systems. The budget amount will depend on the scope and complexity of the project, as well as the applicant's ability to demonstrate a clear plan for reducing GHG emissions and improving food sovereignty.
