Description

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is issuing a FY 2026 grant solicitation to fund research that advances knowledge on elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. Applicants may propose projects in one or more of four focus areas: (1) the role of emerging technologies in detecting and preventing fraud against older adults; (2) forensic research to strengthen investigations and prosecutions; (3) evaluation of prevention, intervention, or response programs; and (4) development of education and intervention strategies targeting financial fraud. Up to three awards will be made, with a total ceiling of $1.8 million. The grant is open to a broad range of entities, including state and local governments, higher‑education institutions, nonprofits, for‑profit firms, and tribal entities. Submissions are accepted electronically from 22 Oct 2026 through 30 Nov 2026. • Funding mechanism: NIJ Research, Evaluation, and Development Project Grants (CFDA 16.560) • Estimated total funding: $1,800,000 across three awards (≈ $600,000 per award) • Eligible applicants: state, local, tribal governments; universities; nonprofits (501(c)(3) and others); for‑profit firms (including small businesses) • Required deliverables: research reports, data sets, and recommendations relevant to elder‑abuse prevention and prosecution • Contact: OJP Response Center (800‑851‑3420, [email protected])

Budget estimate

$300,000 – $900,000

The NOFO indicates a total award ceiling of $1,800,000 for three separate grants, implying an average award of about $600,000. Given the range of possible project scopes—from focused forensic studies to multi‑year technology‑focused investigations—individual award amounts could reasonably vary from $300,000 for smaller, narrowly scoped projects up to $900,000 for larger, multi‑disciplinary efforts. Factors influencing the final amount include the complexity of the research design, the number of personnel, required technology development, and the breadth of program‑evaluation components.
