Description

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is seeking information from interested respondents concerning available transit station platform screen door systems. The MBTA is looking to enhance passenger safety on raised rapid transit platforms with a reliable and cost-effective system that requires minimal resources to operate and maintain. The system must be capable of detecting when trains are arriving/departing the station and automatically deploy/retract screen doors to allow for safe and efficient offboarding and onboarding of passengers. The system must also ensure accessibility and emergency egress operations, be vandal and tamper resistant, and comply with all applicable Federal, State, and local requirements. • The MBTA operates different trainsets with varying numbers of doors and door locations, power contact systems, and signaling systems. • The exact location at which trains stop at station platforms is controlled by the operator and is not consistent. • The system must be capable of supporting MBTA transit operations up to 21 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year with 4-to-6-minute headways between trains. • The system must include safeguards against malicious operation by non-MBTA actors. • The system must be capable of detecting when trains are arriving/departing the station and automatically deploy/retract screen doors to allow for safe and efficient offboarding and onboarding of passengers.

Budget estimate

$10,000,000 – $50,000,000

The budget for this project is difficult to estimate, as the RFI does not provide a specific budget or cost range. However, considering the scope of the project, which involves the installation of platform screen door systems at MBTA stations, the cost could be substantial. The cost of such systems can vary widely depending on the technology, materials, and installation requirements. As a rough estimate, the cost of a single platform screen door system could range from $500,000 to $2 million, depending on the complexity of the system and the number of doors required. For a large-scale project like this, the total cost could be in the tens of millions of dollars. Therefore, a possible budget range for this project could be $10 million to $50 million.
