Description

The ARPA‑H COSMOS initiative seeks to determine whether micro‑gravity accelerates tissue aging and to build a high‑throughput, autonomous drug‑screening platform in low‑Earth orbit. Proposers must design, produce, and manage large numbers of microphysiological systems (MPS) or organoids from healthy donors, conduct a twin study (ground vs. flight) with autonomous flight lasting four weeks, and partner with at least one Fortune‑100 biopharma company. The effort is split into a 27‑month Phase I (including two LEO launches) and an optional 15‑month Phase II for disease‑model screening, with extensive multi‑omics data generation, in‑silico aging models, and mandatory data‑sharing. No hardware or flight services are in scope for technical performers; those will be handled by separate commercial service providers.

Budget estimate

$20,000,000 – $50,000,000

The solicitation does not disclose a Not‑to‑Exceed ceiling, but the scale of work—producing hundreds of MPS, conducting two LEO flights, extensive multi‑omics assays, building in‑silico models, and securing Fortune‑100 partnerships—suggests a multi‑year, high‑cost effort. Comparable ARPA‑H and NASA OT awards for similar space‑biotech programs range from $20 million to $50 million over the full program (Phase I + Phase II). Therefore a realistic award envelope is estimated between $20 M and $50 M. Factors influencing the final amount include the number of donors, depth of omics profiling, cost of autonomous flight hardware, and the extent of biopharma partnership work.
