Description

The DARPA Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI) 2026 seeks high‑risk, high‑reward research and prototype development that can demonstrate a utility‑scale quantum computer (USQC) by 2033. Proposals must be submitted in response to specific QBIT (Quantum Benchmarking Initiative Topic) calls, each defining its own abstract, proposal, and oral‑presentation requirements. Funding will be through Other Transaction (OT) agreements and will be milestone‑driven. The effort focuses on revolutionary quantum‑computing concepts, verification and validation tools, and risk‑reduction prototypes, explicitly excluding incremental improvements to existing systems. • Develop and describe a USQC concept with a plausible near‑term path. • Create a detailed R&D plan that identifies risks, mitigation steps, and prototype milestones. • Provide DARPA with verification and validation tools/methods to confirm the USQC approach can be built and operated as intended. • Awards are multiple, OT‑based, and require SAM registration, WAWF invoicing capability, and compliance with CUI handling and OCI policies. • All submissions must be made by 30 Dec 2026, with individual QBIT deadlines to be announced later.

Budget estimate

$5,000,000 – $20,000,000

DARPA does not disclose award amounts, but similar high‑risk quantum‑computing OT awards have ranged from a few million dollars up to tens of millions. Assuming multiple awards, each award could be roughly $5 M to $20 M depending on scope and prototype milestones, leading to an overall potential spend in the $10 M–$50 M range.
