Description

The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking industry partners to license, co-develop, or evaluate a behind-the-meter energy management technology for peak shaving and load shaping. The technology is a control algorithm that manages energy storage and onsite generation to reduce peak demand and energy costs. It is designed to be scalable and can be applied across various facility types, including residential, commercial, and industrial. The ideal partners may include power-system software developers, energy technology firms, and electric utilities. • The technology uses a two-stage method: proactive hour-ahead scheduling based on forecasts, followed by real-time adjustment based on measured conditions. • It incorporates weather and meteorological data to improve forecasting of onsite generation and load. • The technology adapts usable battery state-of-charge range to energy-security needs, reserving a narrower range where only a single fuel source is available. • It is designed to respond to utility demand-response commands, price signals, and technical constraint signals, and to operate in both grid-connected and islanded modes.

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $5,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is difficult to estimate, as it is a licensing and development partnership rather than a traditional procurement. However, the potential revenue for the partner could be substantial, depending on the scope and scale of the project. Factors that may influence the likely payment range include the size and type of facilities where the technology is deployed, the level of demand for peak shaving and load shaping, and the competitive landscape of the energy management market. A rough estimate for the budget could be in the range of $500,000 to $5 million, depending on the specifics of the partnership and the project's success.
