What Is Bid Status? How to Search Open Bids, Closed Bids, and Award Data

Understanding what bid status is on Bid Banana can help you decide how and when to act on new opportunities.

Understanding bid status on Bid Banana helps you quickly decide how to act on each opportunity. Use the bid status filter to avoid spending time on outdated opportunities and plan your prospecting and proposal strategy.

What Is Bid Status?

On the Bid Banana platform, each opportunity on the platform is assigned a bid status.

The bid status represents three distinct lifecycle phases:

  1. Open – actively accepting submissions.
  2. Closed – submissions are no longer accepted.
  3. Awarded – a contract has been awarded to a vendor.

Knowing which phase a bid is in helps you:

  • Decide whether you should respond now or plan for a future opportunity.
  • Identify agencies that regularly buy your products or services.
  • Analyze past awards to refine pricing and positioning.

You can filter by bid status on the search page and in the search results. Use the data results from different bid status searches to learn more about the opportunities that best fit your current strategy.

💡 Tip: When you find an open opportunity or data from closed or previously awarded bids, be sure to favorite the result by clicking the Banana Icon. The result will be saved to your Favorites tab.

Open Bids

Open bids are active opportunities that are currently accepting submissions. Bid Banana posts thousands of local, state, and federally sourced bid opportunities every day. These are the solicitations and projects that offer organizations the most immediate return on their investment.

Strategic Uses for Open Bids

  • Identify available opportunities: Search open bids when your goal is to identify and pursue contracts you can respond to immediately.
  • Automate and save searches: Use Bid Banana’s Saved Search from the search results page to save multiple keywords and search filters. Bid Banana will send daily email alerts when new opportunities match your saved criteria.
💡 Tip: Click on each search result to review a summary of key information about the bid. Learn more about what's included in each result's Bid Details page.

Closed Bids

Closed bids are opportunities where the submission deadline has passed. You can no longer submit a proposal, but the information remains valuable for research and planning.

Strategic Uses for Closed Bids

  • Inform market research: Identify which agencies regularly issue RFPs for your services or products.
  • Improve target prospecting: Build a list of organizations to monitor or contact ahead of their next cycle.
  • Learn from past solicitation requests: See how often specific agencies bid out similar work, then track agencies that award work in your space and monitor their future open bids.

Award Data

Award data is sourced from previous opportunities in which a vendor has been selected, and the contract has been finalized and published.

Strategic Uses for Award Data

  • Identify winning competitors: Filter award data by category, region, or keyword, then note which vendors appear repeatedly.
  • Review pricing and scope: Where available, review contract values, term lengths, and scope details. Use this information to benchmark your pricing and proposed solutions.
  • Plan future proposals: Adjust your proposal content, pricing strategy, and value proposition based on past awards.
