Description

NASA is offering a licensing opportunity for its Lunar Experiment Support System and Handling (LESSH) Battery Charger Module (BCM), an EVA‑compatible, ruggedized charger designed for lunar surface operations. The BCM provides 215 W power output, supports 28 V astronaut‑rated batteries, includes a pre‑heater for extreme temperatures, and offers 1000BASE‑T Ethernet data pass‑through. Interested companies may apply for exclusive or non‑exclusive patent licenses; NASA provides no development funding. This technology is at TRL 4 and could be adapted for harsh‑environment terrestrial applications as well. • License the BCM hardware and associated intellectual property (patent) for commercial use. • No funding from NASA; revenue comes from license royalties or up‑front fees. • Potential markets include lunar/Martian exploration hardware, robotics, drones, and other harsh‑environment sensor systems.

Budget estimate

$50,000 – $500,000

Because NASA provides no direct funding, revenue would stem from licensing agreements—typically an upfront fee plus ongoing royalties. Similar NASA technology licenses have generated anywhere from a few tens of thousands to several hundred thousand dollars over the first few years, depending on market adoption. Assuming modest commercial uptake, a reasonable estimate is $50,000–$500,000 in total license revenue.
