The Bureau of Land Management is seeking a contractor to perform manual fuel reduction/thinning and slash management on approximately 202 acres of land in Township 8N, Range 16W, Section 13, near the rural community of Candy Kitchen, New Mexico. The project aims to improve ecosystem health by reducing the density of piñon and juniper trees, which have encroached on grasslands and meadows, decreasing watershed capabilities, wildlife habitat, and forage production. The contractor will be required to hand-cut trees using chainsaws and other hand equipment, and scatter the slash throughout the area. The project is expected to be completed between October 1, 2026, and February 1, 2027.
• The contractor will be responsible for retaining all ponderosa pine trees, except where densities require light thinning.
• The contractor will be required to leave any healthy live juniper trees with a diameter of 14 inches or greater, and any healthy live piñon trees with a diameter of 12 inches or greater.
• The contractor will be required to cut any live piñon and juniper trees that do not meet the leave tree criteria.
• The contractor will be required to sever all live limbs and green needles from cut stumps, and cut stumps should be 6 inches or less in height.
• The contractor will be required to place cut material 30 feet from structures, such as fences, waters, and powerlines.
The contractor will be evaluated based on their experience, technical approach, and price. The contractor must submit a quote, including their experience, technical approach, and price, by the submission deadline.
