RFP Design Services for Zoo Master Plan

The City of Hutchinson, Kansas, is seeking professional consulting services for the planning and design of the Hutchinson Zoo's Master Plan Phase 1: Train Loop and Animal Habitat Expansion. The project includes the design of a new front entrance, Sulcata Tortoise and Kangaroo Habitat, structural upgrades to train tracks, and train loop animal habitats. The selected firm will work closely with City Administration, Zoo staff, and community stakeholders to provide key deliverables, including documentation of existing conditions, schematic design plan, design development drawings, documented cost estimates, and stamped construction documents. The total project budget is $925,000, which includes construction and design services. Some key features of the project include: • A new heated holding building connected to the train barn for winter viewing of tortoises and kangaroos • A relocated train station to serve as the first step of an upgraded train ride experience • Train loop animal habitats highlighting the benefits of conserving native prairie plant species • Adjacent shelters with adequate lighting, drainage, water, supplemental heat, and extra electrical outlets The City desires to begin this project in early 2026 with a completion date for construction documents on or before May 31, 2026.
